English translation: Once upon a time there lived in Pahang a man named Jenal with his wife Debus and one boy called mat dong. One day Jenal spoke to his wife, “Let us look for a place to make a clearing and plant rice”. So they set out and found a good place for a clearing on the bank of the Chemerka river. They felled the big timber, cleared the shrub, burnt it off and fenced it and built a hut in the middle of a clearing. Then they planted their padi, gourds and sugar-cane and lived there. The three of them guarding their crops from the attacks of pigs and deer. The months pass and the rice ripened. They reaped it and stored it in their hut. Soon, Jenal fell ill. He could not rise or take food, and every day the sickness got worse. Debus called her son, “Go and tell grandmother! Bring her here at once, for I fear your father will die!” And the boy ran off into the jungle. Debus and her husband were left in their hut in the clearing. As the hours of his death approached, a gray tinge spread over his body and his breath was labored. His wife was troubled. Hoping that her mother would come soon. After a few more minutes, Jenal was dead, and his wife wailed and mourned him. She fetched white cloth and covered the corpse with it. There she was left alone, husking betel nuts with an old pair of scissors and peering into the darkness for her mother's coming. All of a sudden, she heard the sound of climbing on the house ladder and called out “Who is there?” “Cone in!” “It is I” came the answer as an ancient crone entered with a humped back, gap-toothed with long skinny fingers and nails like talons. “When did your man die?” she asked, The young widow answered “About dusk this evening, and I am glad that you have come left alone as I am in the middle of the jungle” The old hag went up to the body and lifted the cloth that covered it and licked it. When Debus saw this, she knew that the old hag was an evil spirit. She took the scissors and pretended to be husking betel nuts, but while she did so she glanced above and there all along the beams and joists she saw a row of ghosts dangling their feet dressed like hajis and her knees shook with fear. Seeking to escape, she dropped her scissors through the floor and cried “Old dame. I have dropped my scissors. I must go out and fetch them.” The crone answered, “Don’t bother, it is dark outside, and you have husked enough nuts.” “Not enough yet, mother. I’ll go and get the scissors.” So, she went out. When she reached the ground, she ran away at once. After she ran about twenty yards, she heard the thud of the ghosts as they leaped down to chase her. Debus knew running was futile, so she hid behind a great tree trunk and the swarm of ghosts rushed past. A second later they run into a wild sow, grunting as she turned in her wallow, and the ghost thought it was the woman. “Where are you hiding?” they leered “Wherever it maybe, we shall have your blood tonight.” and they fell on the pig and beat it to death. Debus stole away, making a wide turn and never stopped until she reached her mother’s house. She told her all that had happened and her father said, “Wait till day break, and we all go to the clearing to bury your man” At day break they collected ten brave men who went to the clearing and looked at the corpse. The cloth over it was thrown aside in a heap. The body lay on its face with its limbs awry. All over the body were purple bruises from where the ghosts had sucked blood. Then they took the body and buried it in the graveyard. The place was forthwith abandoned, nor to this day can anybody be found daring enough to make a clearing on the banks of the Chemerka river.
