Distant Animals is a researcher, artist and educator working in the fields of sonic, video, and performance art, whose practice often interrogates notions of participation, community, social-impact and political action. He has written numerous articles concerning the mechanics of shared space and the relationship between creativity and the everyday, and received his PhD from Sussex University in 2017.
Although working within a broad range of mediums, he has developed a body of practice-based research that interprets the philosophies of social-theorists such Jean-Luc Nancy, Emanuel Levinas, and Jacques Ranciere
Through a prism of social anthropology and systems theory that places the human subject, and lived experience, at the heart of the creative endeavour. By developing a practice indebted to the political and participatory resonance of creative acts situated at the intersect of autonomy and collaboration, the artist seeks to enliven the tension between sense (what is perceived by the senses) and sense (what is made sensible by the community). He has recorded, written, performed and researched numerous socially-oriented works across Europe, often choosing to work with a diverse range of collaborators, including artists, ecologists, choreographers, theologians, lawyers, and political activists.
